Thin Lizzy's takes on Whisky in a Jar and Rosalie come to mind.

I like Terry Reid's take on things, but right now all I can think of is Something's Got a Hold on My Heart and Season of the Witch.

NoMeansNo and Beefeater both did covers of Manic Depression that I liked.

I used to have this 7" split single by a couple of bands called 2Bad and Happy Ever After, with one band covering Lexicon Devil and the other covering Wasted. I was never sure which band was covering what, because there was some confusion with the packaging and labelling, but the cover of Lexicon Devil killed. So much better than the original.
You call me a hater like that's a bad thing

just astral !

Thanks for reminding me of that one - I'm going to dig it out and have a listen again in a sec.

[Edit: Haven't listened to it for years... It's quite nice, but the singer's voice annoys me a little now!]

The Nau Ensemble's Joy Division cover album/experimental chamber-music-thing, The Eternal is stunning.
