I'm not one to normally get all polito-dicky but....ignorant people should be seen and not heard... something like that.
This company manufactured for a dying market with the utmost respect to quality and tradition..they had mostly old school workers who were making tape while we were jerking off to Dana Plato....they strived to actually increase the quality of a product with a declining demand. This company is doing what it can to stay in business..and to keep as many employees in work....so the really informed people saying things like

"yeah, like closing their doors without notice....blah, blah" and " if this is how they treat their employees...blah, blah"

should probably go back to making fun of whatever band it is they don't like or obsessing about the guy who picked on them in high school. You obviously have never owned a business...Quantegy did not sell off jobs to robots or another country...they are merely trying to survive..and I am sure closing their doors was not high on their list of things to do.....

The spoiled, angry, lazy brats of my generation have a knack for pissing on everything.....stop. Be productive. Be involved or get out of the way....stop bitching....

Sorry I am sure I took this too far for this instance. It is just the breaking of the camel's back for me.

Thank you ...fight the good fight!
Line 6 products are confusing to me. I bought the Fender and Marshall instead.

you've seen the pictures. do you think there was a better way of laying off those employees or not?

yeah, it shoulda been way more like the scene near the end of the film Gung Ho, where batman convinces the japanese stodge to give the slapdash buncha american joes the contract, even though they were typical american workers, far inferior to the japanese, even when you add norm into it?

in case there's any question, i'm kidding here. i'm generally excessively PC. but in all sincerity, how do you picture it should have been done? specifically?

Lifted from the Studer List.

I just talked to Steve Smith to get the story on Quantegy. Steve retired from Quantegy Oct 1, but continued as a consultant until December. The primary problem forcing the shutting of Quantegy was cash flow. Video tape sales had declined to the point that there were not sufficient funds to pay oxide, base film, and other vendors.

Over fifty parties had considered buying Quantegy in the past five years, but no one was able to put together a financial plan that made any sense. In addition, raw materials were becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. Dupont stopped making 1.5 mil basefilm, flanges had quadrupled in price in the past six years, and oxide manufactures were disinclined to produce audio oxides because of the spiraling decline in demand. Ampex sold 250,000 reels of two inch in 1992. Quantegy sold 2,500 in 2004.

Apparently some investors bought two coating lines from Emtec after its demise and are planning to manufacture in the Netherlands. So there is some hope for analog. Quantegy will not rise again. I suggest people buy tape stocks as soon as they can.

Sorry to add to the noise, but this is as straight a story as is available on Quantegy.

I'm just a humble tascam 8 track cassette user, but I've noticed that typeII cassettes are no longer readily available. Guitar center carries them but you can't just walk into the drugstore and buy a 60 minute type II cassette anymore. Is ALL tape medium beginning to dissapear? VHS Cassettes, Reels? It can't go away completely can it? You can still buy Betamax and eight track at Radio Shack for christs sake.

from tapeop... spread the word
Just got off the Phone with the guys from Lyndstrom/ATR services.

THEY WILL BE MAKING TWO TAPE FORMULATIONS, IN ALL FORMATS WITHIN TWO TO THREE MONTHS!!!!!!!

Carl Rusk is who I was on the phone with, he is one of the people in the "doom and gloom" Wall St. Journal article.

There will be a High Output formulation based on some of our old favorites, and a lower output formulation based on a very old favorite.

YES. FOR REAL. THIS IS IN MOTION, AND THEY WILL BE MAKING TAPE WITHIN THE NEXT THREE MONTHS!!!!!!

This company should be supported. Obviously this was a wake up call.
Tell anyone with a tape machine. The tape will be BETTER quality than what we have been dealing with lately.
