personally, if i were you, i would take a small portion of the tuition money, buy some gear and do it guerilla-style for a few years, building up your skills and (possibly) your reputation as an engineer. record people for free or cheap for a while.
He can do both. Between Columbia, interning here, and lugging my shit all over Cook County recording bands I learned a lot.
