Update:

I hadn't spoken to my friend in a while, which was long enough for him to pick up an SSL console (sweet) and Pro Tools HD. (which can apparently read sound designer 1 files )

So problem solved for now. I'll just be running over there now to get a look at that SSL.

fwiw, max can only read sd2 out of the box. probably wouldn't be too hard to write an external though, if you're the type that writes externals.
