Yesterday, my girlfriend told me that my love of music...the origin of my love for music, that is...stems from a love of commercially successful grunge rock.

When I was 17 or so, this was true...and I was reading Pitchfork (bad medicine...it made me wonder why "all the bands" suck so much now [this proved to be untrue]).

Now, I do NOT like commercially successful grunge rock (duh). I did defend some Stone Temple Pilot radio staples this summer, but it should be clear that I couldn't be bothered to give two shits about Scott Weiland, etc.

All this being said, I never liked Soundgarden. Ever.

They suck azzzz.

NerblyBear wrote:Soundgarden was an excellent hard rock band. Their songs were crafted very well, from the interesting time signatures to the beautiful Beatles-like melodies that came with albums like "Superunknown." Cornell's voice was very powerful.

I think that Soundgarden was one of the best bands of the '90's. To compare them to crap like Alice in Chains is to do them a great disservice.

NerblyBear's posts are clearly generated by some sort of freshman composition machine.

Kerble hates them and he thinks that Polvo was the greatest band in the world. He rates Black Sabbath above Led Zeppelin, an indefensible claim. I think we can gauge the level of his taste by these facts.

How does someone hyping soundgarden argue that LZ indisputably trumps Sabbath?
You are aware that Sabbath informed SG's sound/look more than any other band, rite?

Again, CRAP.

It's also "'90s," but who's keeping score?

You enjoy the music of Soundgarden.

Maybe i've discovered stuff since then that was 1000X better than Soundgarden, but they, along with Faith No More, They Might Be Giants, and (to a lesser degree) Nirvana, were the bands that opened my mind to the fact that yes, there IS more interesting music than hair metal. So again, NOT CRAP for all of these reasons.

Dr Akward, amico mio.
when you say that Nirvana, she opens your mind less, you break my heart. my eyes, they drown in the tears.
one thing simple: no Nirvana means no Brainiac.
okay, the Brainiac she has the Devo influence, she has that Pere Ubu influence. but the Sonic Youth and the Nirvana, they were the mamma of Brainiac. you can hear it all on the first record of the Brainiac.
so, the Nirvana she doesn't open your mind DIRECTLY, but INDIRECTLY...ooohhh...she opens your mind like Rocco opens buttholes.

Smack Bunny Baby most definitely has elements that, to my 20-year-old ears, sounded like Nirvana when i first heard it. This cannot be denied. My only point in that original post was that i was a much bigger fan of FNM and TMBG than i was of Nirvana. But all those bands played their part in helping me realize that there was more to music than Motley Crue.

Incidentally, Soundgarden is still not crap. And NerblyBear, Sabbath stomps all over Zeppelin by a country mile.
