I'm going to echo the Powershot praise.
If I was going to recommend a camera, I'd recommend a second hand canon 350D. Not a Powershot. It's what I use, and it's all that you'll ever need. The later models in the series may sound tempting, but really you'd just be paying for features that you don't need. The extra specs don't make any difference, and if you look after your camera, you don't need it to automatically shudder to shake dust off the lens.
Unfortunately, it's still pretty expensive, but it's a great digital SLR for the cost. You'd probably want to buy a new lens, the one that comes with it in the box isn't impressive, which is why I suggest buying one second hand, where you could probably save money by not buying the lens, or buying a different lens altogether. Best battery life I've ever seen on a camera, even with excessive use of the flash, I can take regular pictures for well over a week before it'll need charging.
It doesn't use SD cards however. For this reason, I suggest you try out the Powershot that Tommy recommended. Which doesn't use a rechargeable batteries...
Perhaps, you can find a canon model that is somewhere between the two cameras, but I have no idea what that camera is. Just make sure you get an extra bulky looking camera. Those are hopelessly stylish right now.
