The tone of the article might be a bit irritating, but check
this page out. You can stick it together on a 'breadboard' (with clips...you don't really even need to solder anything, although if it works out, you should), and it seems like a nice, easy starter synth. I
would include the filter, as you will get a lot more sounds out of it for a few more parts...
There are scads more resources on this internet thing...do a search for 'beginner DIY synth analog', or something like that.
