I just purchased a pair of the same Mic under a different branding (and of course no transformer mod and I believe the Fat Head is un-modded at the price point you mentioned ) from a dude on ebay for about $125 (FOR THE PAIR with nice boxes and okay shockmounts) including shipping. I have only had a chance to give them a quick run through but they were definitely better than expected/ pretty cool . He also removes the excess internal pop filters and checks for ribbon sag before he ships.
Here are his current Ebay items http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZnoelthemusician
Nice guy too.

i really like the shure sm7 i have. usually gets it done on kick drum, floor tom, room mic for a drum set, on an amp for electric bass and electric guitars (clean and distorted), usually great on most male vocals, i will also mention the electro voice re/20 for the same reasons. i really don't have a favorite mic, just starting points on sorces...the beyer 201 is also pretty good at a bunch of things, the akg d112 can make for some good screaming vocal takes besides being good on the kick drum, floor tom, electric bass and guitar cabs...i largely use which ever of these has the best suited bleed factor. the audio technica p37 is really good in applications one might not consider...electric bass guitar cab...

I love those, they get overlooked I think.
Lately I have been putting EV 635As on a lot of stuff (they are almost free too)
I love the Sennheiser 407 (409?) The little one that looks like a salt shaker.

The nicest mic I have ever heard was a Neumann ORTF radio Tube LDC (6-something I think) I have never heard a mic that sounded a natural as it and would punch a nun for one.

I also have 2 Allied mics that go to a Reel to Reel that I love and paid $2 for.

What all do you put those EV 635's on? Does it handle high SPL. They are really cheap on ebay. I've never owned an omni mic that is not a large diaphragm condensor. This one looks end address, is it omni from all sides of the end you would speak towards?

Other question: Is the Beyer M88 mostly a kick drum/overhead mic, or is it cool on guit/bass amp, or tom/snare?

I have two M88s. One is for bass drum and scratch vocals, the other will never see a kick drum from inside and is used mainly for snare, guitar and bass cabs and sometimes vocals.
