Coles 4038.

I have heard a few recordings a friend of mine has done where he mic'd an entire live 4-piece with a smattering of 4038s and the result was wonderful. One of the most versatile mics I've ever heard, although on the rare occasions he lets me borrow his set to do some of my recording, I've never been able to replicate the same results. Captures the vicious guitar, explosive crash, booming bass thing really well, which is all any of the people I record ever seem to want.

Other question: Is the Beyer M88 mostly a kick drum/overhead mic, or is it cool on guit/bass amp, or tom/snare?

I really like them for drum over heads and as a vocal mic. They can handle high SPL fine. Also not bed on toms or snare. I do not like them for distorted guitars much but they are OK for clean. If you have a very clean pre with a lot of gain they can sound cool on a Acoustic guitars too.

What would that be considered , two figure eights set up like an x/y ? It wouldn't quite be Blumlien..what is it? and is it useful ?

It would be Blumlein, unless the capsules were not at 90 degrees to each other. In which case there would be a gap in the resulting stereo image, I suppose. It could be useful if there was something in the middle of whatever you're recording that you didn't like?

I was thinking more like the 2 front pickup patterns overlaying each other
and the rear pickups shooting out toward the right and left. It would be sort of a Triangle pattern with a super wide cardioid in the front and two cardioids in the rear...maybe?

Ah, I'd call that A/B rather than X/Y. I guess you'd end up with a sort of quasi-mono with a stereo rear image? Hmm...
