My good friends in the New Year, they have realized that many fusion artists have names that can double as prescription drugs or pharmaceutical companies.

Pastorius (appetite suppressant) and Zawinul (sleep aid) were two of the better examples.

Weather Report, they were crap. I have played Birdland on the bass in high school jazz band, and I had to listen some of the different Weather Report records at that time, as requirement of my schooling. They were from the fusion/funk era of WR, and they were crap.

Luckily, we later moved onto doing Groovin' High and Cherokee and so forth. Which were played not-very-well! But at least it was good music!

I have also had to hear more of these records in the Missoula record store where I work. They were all crap to me. First two records are indeed like late-60s Miles. If it was crap instead of great.

Return to Forever: crap

Mahavishnu Orchestra: not all crap! Some of it is OK! But it's not that great either!

'Birdland' was designed to be a hit in an era when hit instrumentals were commonplace. It is not representative of the depth and sophistication of WR's music.

May I suggest Night Passage and I
Sing The Body Electric

both are phenominal..

...but I know it's a lost cause to make some of you understand the power and beauty of their music. Such an easy target to mock and dismiss.

R.I.P. Joe Zawinul. You were the most unique of all the ex-Miles keyboardists and inspired me to no end.

Black Market is pretty cool, but I could never get too into these guys after I discovered Mahavishnu...

Not that they are mutually exlcusive, but WR just seemed lame after I discovered another band doing such better things with fusion in that time frame.

I like Wayne Shorter's playing...

Return to Forever's "Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy" is really cool. Very trippy at points. The only thing I can say I enjoy that Chick Corea did.

"Chick" is such a jazz name, but if someone started calling me "Chick", I would correct that as soon as possible. You have to wonder about a guy who lets jazz dudes call him "Chick".

As far as MO, I can't believe how fast John McG plays that 12-string. I have a 12 string and they are hard to play... Also, it shows the redeeming value of Jan Hammer. His keyboarding is sick. That detuned Rhodes is so sick, it makes me want to hurl, but in a cool way. Yeah, they had some stinkers, but they have 2-3 SOLID records, which is rare in the fusion world.

I love some of the newer fusion... Happy Family -- absolutely love it. Hey, they're even named after a Crimson song. But there is far more zeuhl in what they do...

It looks as if you're really trying to sell your ignorance.

I'll try to make an analogy you can understand:
Acoustic Alchemy is to Weather Report
like
The Alan Parsons Project is to Queen

Try sticking to subjects exclusive to rock perhaps.

Rock huh.

Wanky crap is to wanky crap as Acoustic Alchemy is to Weather Report.

Put whoever else you want in there. George Benson, Dream Theater, etc.

Weather Report is not Rock. Although they were disco on occasion (River People).
