Need Me Some Soul

My favourite sixties soul singer, for sheer guts and performance, is Britain's own soul brother: Geno Washington. Yes, the guy Dexy's wrote Geno about; the guy who came to Britain as a GI, assembled a crack R&B band, and tour up the club circuit; the guy who couldn't make a studio album to save his life, but made two stupendous live LPs; the guy whose live act nowadays involves a hypnosis show (he's a qualified hypnotherapist) which I have missed twice (he cancelled!) but which I am determined to see one day; the guy who has just popped into my view on YouTube with a bunch of scorching videos with his Ram Jam Band from the sixties.

Start with this one, then go to the search page and try anything in black and white.

So, so, so, so good. Technically, he was no kind of singer. But the soul! The guts! The performance! I love Geno Washington.

GENO! GENO! GENO!

Edit: I didn't realise how many of those videos are slideshows. This one certainly isn't; and any Geno Washington live recordings you can hear will be good for you, trust me.

It's true: Geno Washington is awesome. And you know who else is awesome, sings, is from the midwest and has just about the the same name?

Gino Washington

...totally different Detroit R&B singer from the early 60s, a kind of Jackie Wilson-ish singer with a bigger voice.

Gino/Geno Washingtons, salut!
