Guitar Solo: Comfortably Numb

I didn't get the Floyd when The Wall came out. It was what the stoner 8th graders listened to, and I was non-stoner 7th grade. How much I missed.

The "Comfortably Numb" solos are the anti-crap, as far from crap as one can get.

The first one rolls along, clean, on the ocean of strings and bass, a little intro to the next minute or two of verse, as it starts the climb. It ratchets up, those naked thunky bass notes herald the second solo, and it crashes down, all dirty beauty, to bring it home. And then, after it's all over, you can just stop the record because the rest of the album is Roger's "Woe is me" psychodrama filler.

I cried during the second solo on the Division Bell tour at Soldier Field. So beautiful, "Comfortably Numb"! Solo-ut!
Let's stick together and futurize our attitudes!

My knee-jerk reaction is "crap," since it's upper-register Strat wheedling. Chorused upper-register Strat wheedling, no less.

However, this particuar slice of upper-register Strat wheedling happens to make up some key thematic material that moves the song forward. Take it away, and a huge part of the song is missing.

NOT CRAP. Waffle 8 for foreshadowing cargo-pants-era Clapton.
