Best Band Evolutions

It might be kind of hard to get a thread on band development going if you kick it off with an example like the Ex. It's not easy to think of another instance as dramatic as the Ex - it seems like they first started to realize their full potential after they'd already been playing for ten years.

Most bands already have started their downward spiral by this time. In fact, while picking my brain for good examples of band evolution, it seemed like every instance that occurred to me was in fact an example of band de-evolution, often of catastrophic proportions, i.e. the Stranglers, Gang of Four, Siouxsie and the Banshees.

Anyway, one example did come to mind, although it's not a classic or even very good one:

Blonde Redhead.

They may not have left this world behind in the course of their career, but they did cover a lot of territory and made it to a way different point than they started off at. "Mia Vita Violenta" is still my favorite record of theirs, though.
