Blind, at age 12 (!) if you just count the harmonica, he was already a better musician than any of the dudes you mention. He was also eventually a super badass arranger, drummer and guitarist.

They forget he was doing it all from memory, no peekies and he played every sound you hear on most of it.

Fuck me, if there's a badder dude in all of music I couldn't name him.

He may be the Beethoven of our time. He may be a better guitar player than jimi hendrix and an all around super fantastic player. I suppose as a musician he is a super bad-ass.

but there are about 2 songs that have ever left an impression on me (Sir Duke and Superstition).

but Cash has THE VOICE. Every song he sings, he has that voice - full of dread and pain and death. Hearing him sing Ring of Fire or Folsom Blues is a cathartic experience. There are no other voices like that (besides Thalia Zedek). The only things that fail to click with me are the jokey joke songs (One Piece at a Time) where he is trying to be funny. But those are cute in their own way.

I respect Stevie, he is a hell of a player. Cash just moves me on a different level.

1 - stevie was blind from infancy.
2 - he was signed to Motown at 12. ON MOTOWN AT TWELVE FUCKING YEARS OLD.
3 - guitar? When did Stevie ever play guitar? that's all keyboard, isn't it? (I almost always see guitar credited on his stuff, and it ain't ever to stevie.)

Cash's voice is beautiful and grim, and probably hits me on a harder level than Stevie's does, but Stevie is on another plane musically. If it comes down to the groove or the voice, then I'll be damned if I don't take the groove every fucking time.

My vote is influenced by the fact that I've been listening to Songs In The Key of Life lately, but it really isn't much of a contest.

You're all a bunch of unfunky motherfuckers.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.

Innervisions, Songs In The Key Of Life, Secret Life Of Plants- I find these record genuinely odd records. I couldn't explain it, but they baffle me, time and again. They come from a genuinely strange place.

I was never baffled by Johnny Cash.

Yep.

This song is my favourite Stevie track, and it baffles me everytime I listen to it.

I try to work the parts of the track out in my head and it just messes with my brain.
