Firstly hi, I'm new here. I've been checking out the studio. Would love to record there some day. Big fan of Big Black, Rapeman, Shellac and all that shit, blah blah I'm sure you've heard it all before

What I really want to know is, having been playing it on rotation for days wondering just what the hell I have just listened to and knowing it was something special, do you still consider the debut by Die Kreuzen to be the ultimate american punk record? If so, what about it appeals to you so much? If not, what surpassed it in your affections? For the record I would give the title to either Atomizer or the first Minor Threat EP... couldn't really choose.

The first Die Kreuzen record really only has the Bad Brains' ROIR cassette as competition for the best US hardcore on record. If you have those two, you can pretty much skip everything else and feel good about not missing much.

If you wanted to get into the second tier, you'd get Void, Negative Approach and Minor Threat. After that it's a long stretch to anything that isn't pure bullshit.

Firstly, thanks for the swift reply. This may or may not be a stupid question (since the answer may be blatantly obvious considering the first album) but are the Die Kreuzen albums after the eponymous worth hearing too? I have heard conflicting arguments, although I guess that's as good a reason to check out a record as any.

As for ROIR sessions, I can't believe I didn't mention it myself. Banned in DC should be mandatory listening for all children.

And on a completely random note, there may have been word on this already but are there any plans for Shellac to play ATP in 2008? I have never been but feel this is the time. The band appearing on the bill will almost certainly sway my decision.

I think Husker Du's Land Speed Record and Everything Falls Apart belong on that second tier as well. The first album is pretty wierd and free-jazzy for hardcore, but it fits the mold. Everything Falls Apart doesn't have quite the same impact, but is a very worthy hardcore record, barring the Donovan cover.

Die Kreuzen's first album is certainly unbeatable.

Questions about the "GOD LEVEL" record.

whatever genre you might want to shove it into (hardcore/punk/metal), no record has remotely come close to emulating the brilliance of Die Kreuzen’s first album and most “probably” nothing ever will will top it (good if it does).

For me, that first self titled album was way above any album released by the Jesus Lizard, Birthday Party, Ramones or Stooges. I mentioned them since these artists keep getting name checked to death (they deserve to) & I really love all those artists. If collective work were taken into account, Die Kreuzen would be out of contention. However, if individual albums are considered, Die Kreuzen is way up there. That album gives me the same feeling of euphoria now as it did the first time I listened to it 7 years ago.

Their subsequent albums (leaving October file which I think must have influenced Voivod) were not that good.

Still, GOD OF GOD LEVEL.

I am probably one of the few people who bought their tribute record which I did not care for. It's probably fallen down somewhere and I don't intend to look for it.

I wonder how many of you on this board leaving mr.albino were privilieged enough to see them live. I know Mark hansen has, RayJ, Brett Eugene Ralph..endofanera..redline & probably Marsupialized

I still like the Germs "GI" a lot.

The first few times I saw Die Kreuzen, I really thought they were Wisconsin's answer to the Germs. As I recall, they covered a Germs song when they played live as well.
