In the documentary Lynch One, which shows pre-production activities and early shooting of Inland Empire, he and his crew are shown touring and photographing defunct factories, so it may not be too far fetched to consider the such "crumminess" intentional.

i started it an hour late, so i missed all the narrative and just got the fucked up parts.
the rabbits are great. i'll have to subscribe to that one.
i want to watch it again. i wouldn't put anyone else through it though unless they wanted to. i was watching it with a couple of uninterested participants. they left about 2 hours into it.
