anyone else get guitar hero iii for xmas?

I think I got an XBOX 360 for Christmas, but I won't know until I open the rest of my family's presents on New Years Day. If that happens, I'm definitely getting GH3.

I played it at a friends house the other day. And though it's not exactly like playing guitar, the mechanics of it are pretty similar. And boy, was I entertaining when I played!

I want to get this game because it's not only fun as hell, but it's great for practicing finger dexterity (on the harder levels) and tempo. That's all I really need to keep up my chops when I practice on my own. All the creative stuff I usually save for band practice.

Most people have told me that if you're a guitar player, this game is very hard. They are wrong. I picked up the guitar controller and got the hang of it immediately. I played better than most people in the room (I was at a party), the only other person who could keep up with me was my friend who is also a guitar player.

ugh!
I tried to play this the other night at my friends house. Since I already knew some of the songs on a real guitar I thought it would be really fun. Found it seriuosly annoying. It feels like they emphasize the wrong beats. Felt unmusical.. instead of playing to the beat I'm watching little glowing dots. When I listened to my friends, when they hit that little paddle thingie it sounded off beat, but they got really high scores.

Which difficulty did you play it on? It becomes a lot more "on the beat" in the harder levels.

Yes, exactly. It's weird, for people who know what they're doing with an actual guitar, medium+ levels are more exact. The easy level is so easy, it's actually hard.

But, let me give you a tip on this. I'm not a guitar player, but a bass player. I noticed, on the easy level -- for the most part -- you are either going to be playing on the beat or the accent. That's pretty much it. It was pretty easy for me, because that's what I've been doing for over 15 years. It gets boring after awhile. I suggest anyone with any guitar or bass skills to start Guitar Hero on the medium setting and if that's too easy or weird, try hard. Medium+ levels are where you start to use more than 3 buttons and play more notes within the song, including chords.

I know it can be done, but I am not game savvy enough to figure out how to do it.

The wireless controller my friend owns has strap buttons on both sides. Can't remember if the non-wireless do. You'd have to Jimi Hendrix whammy bar it though.

This game is fun, but I don't know about $90 fun. I like playing it at his house though.

i'm playing pretty much only on hard & trying to get into expert mode -- i will second or third those of you that say this is easier for an actual guitar player.

at least, rhythmically easier.

the worst is when attempting to practice difficult sections on slower speeds - the stock drum loop doesn't have its downbeat synched to the guitar part's downbeat - makes it totally worthless...

i do think that it's a nice little strength & range extending device for playing actual factual guitars. pinky finger is getting more of a stretch & more independence from that ring finger than i'm usually willing to give it.

anyway...
