Robbie Robertson did that occasionally. I like it a lot more the way he did it, probably because he was playing cleaner rather than HYPERSATURATED so that it had an airy, gasping quality rather than being just a retarded high note.

Generally crap, but only because of how it's used.

Also, Nils Lofgren's solo on "Speakin' Out" from Tonight's the Night is a good example of the clean pinch harmonic being put to effective use.

An interesting effect can be made tonally by finding the different harmonics you can get off of one note on a single string, or by chording the notes, etc. etc.

Of course, if you use the cliched squeal....

I rarely reference music I am involved with, but at the end of "Shitty Little Yacht" on the Silkworm record called It'll Be Cool, Andy Cohen plays an excellent, sad little guitar solo that is almost all chicken-pickin'.

The sheer quantity of the chicken-pickin' is what makes the solo.

WTF? I always had that wrong. I thought the pinching was the pickin'. And the chicken pickin' had to be called 'Travis picking,' after Merle Travis.

So are chicken pickin' and Travis picking the same thing?
