I was too kind to the article when I said that it "raised some issues that needed to be discussed", despite its usual scaremongering and jingoistic stance. The specific issue that I think needs discussion is the one of over-crowding, which I do think creates a very real problem. Of course, does the Daily Mail go as far as to point out why so many people are keen to come here? Does it offer a critique of the economic system that creates wealth traps and fosters an ever-widening gap between the rich and the poor, both in terms of citizens and countries? 'Course it bloody doesn't. So I guess it doesn't really "raise the issue" so much as spin it in favour of their agenda. Just wanted to clarify that unless people thought I was defending the Daily Mail's stance on immigration.

Overpopulation is a problem, and I'd certainly be interested in any evidence showing that the UK is becoming overpopulated. There'd be plenty of evidence to support a view to the contrary though, I believe.

Which is why I'd be interested in seeing exactly what Tory MP James Clappison's Common's request was and what information he was furnished with. My g/f works for the House of Commons library so this is something I might be able to get unless it's already in the public domain - the ONS website doesn't throw it up in any basic searches. For me at least.

We haven't seen the ONS report ourselves, and given the Mail's agenda and its history why should any of us take their interpretation of these figures at face value?

Agreeing with Simmo here. The Mail presents the influx of immigrants as a bunch of skiving benefit stealing A-rab scum come to rob our women and our jobs and to bomb us.
You won't find much discussion of the corporate involvement and the benefit to these corporations.

I agree with Rick that immigration - generally - is largely involved in many working class folk getting paid less than they used to.
The Daily Mail is a prime reason however of why you can't talk about it without accusations of racism.
