More than one million of the new jobs created in the last decade have gone to foreign-born workers, a study has found.

According to an analysis of figures carried out by the Statistics Commission, 1.4 million of the 2.1 million new jobs since 1997 have been filled by people born overseas.

This figure includes many people whose parents happened to be abroad at the time of birth, but were nevertheless British.

The figures come ahead of the publication of a new report on the demography on the UK.

The National Statisticians Annual Article, the first in a new series of annual reports, gives an overview of the state of the population, using the latest statistics available.

Each year, the report by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) focuses on one specific topic. This year, it will look at fertility, and particularly the impact of migration to the UK.

The Department for Work and Pensions has said the figures suggesting that 81% of new jobs had gone to people born abroad were nothing new.

Are you saying that there is no ONS report, or are you saying that if there is an ONS report, the Mail has printed statistics that do not come from it?

I think that the point generally is that The Daily Mail article is bullshit.

The ONS data (the actual data – the stuff that there is links to but you haven’t bothered to read) doesn’t draw any conclusions about immigration. What the data says simply is that the population density of the UK is increasing.

The Daily Mail (or who-ever sent them the press release) has worded this to imply that the UK population density is a) due to immigration and b) increasing at a rate that out paces other EU countries. However the ONS does not say this – although the Daily Mail and others have worded it to imply that it does. It is actually not true.

The population density of the UK is roughly increasing at the same pace as other Western European countries. And the UK is not alone in accepting immigrants from new member states – in fact all Western European countries have the same issues. They tend to generally accept this as a trade off for the benefits of being part of a wider European union. It is however a topic that is debated, which is a good thing (we like informed debate here), however it has also become a flash point for right wing and Nationalist political groups, which is a bit disappointing for most people.

The rest of the article, as has already been pointed out is just a press release from a conservative party think tank (see above sentence about Nationalist political groups) – it contains only speculation or ‘research’ as the Daily Mail would like you to believe.

Most if the people posting here seem to have grasped these points.

The article is at best misleading or poor journalism. It couples facts from noted sources with conjecture and then represents them both as the same thing. However it is just the same crap that gets printed in the right wing press each day in the UK. At worst the article will be read by uncritical minds and then be accepted as “the truth” though. It seems to have sucked you in already.

Dunno what it has to do with Scotland though.

So immigration has zero effect on the population density of the UK?

Of course not – and I don’t think that I said that. I only said that the Daily Mail would like people to think that it is the only reason. People in the UK also make babies sometimes too.

The tone of the article and of the Daily Mail in general suggests that the UK is being swamped by migrants, that the population is being inundated by migrants. And also the UK alone is being singled out as the destination for these people.

The facts do not support this. The UK’s population grew only .6% (ONS/EIU/Eurostat) last year – so not that much when you think about it. This is in line with all of Western Europe – it is actually a lot smaller than Spain, Norway, Sweden and Ireland’s population growth. The population has also been growing at a rate between .2 and .6 since the 80’s so the new member states joining the EU and the opening of European boarders would seem to have to have little or no significant effect on the UK’s population density. That doesn’t stop it from making great headlines though.

I'd agree. I was only trying to suggest that quoting a Daily Mail article wouldn't really offer much of a balanced view - and trying to show you why.

If you want a right wing paper to quote from try the Telegraph - they at least apply some form of journalistic standards to what they publish.

My favorite Daily Mail article from today -

You may have already noticed, but the Telegraph is Rick's second favourite newspaper to quote from. Which is cool, 'n all, because Rick is about as right-wing as it gets. I mean, that's why he has trouble understanding things, because his agenda always comes first.

I have a brilliant sense of direction and I'm great at reading maps - as my male relatives and husband will testify.

My husband is also very good at finding his way around - it was one of the things that impressed me about him when we first met.

However, my Dad has an absolutely dreadful sense of direction and has been known to lose his way while backing out of the garage. He's definitely not gay - he has seven children.

So yes, as a source The Mail leaves a lot to be desired.
