I sing and happen to play drums at the same time while making music with two other fellows who happen to play in a group with me named Bear Claw. There are other drummers who sing that are great as well. Somebody already mentioned Arcwelder. All I'm saying is that there are a bunch of bands that have drummers that sing who most of us haven't probably heard or can't think of. You can't group all drummers who sing simply in a crap or no crap category with out making an opinion on each one in each setting. Just my opinion...

I sing and drum at once. Maybe i suck, but no one's said it to my face yet.

....

Also from Minneapolis: The Soviettes. Pretty decent singing drummer in that band.

Poppycock! (nothing personal Doc I just really, really like that word this week). Danny from the Soviettes admitted to me one late night over beers that in the all the years he's been in bands he has never actually "sang". It's more like humorous shouting really. It did add a wonderful counterpoint to the three female "singing" vocalists in the Soviettes and is positively hilarious and well done in Awesome Snakes, but taint singing. He told me.

To the general subject of drummers as vocalist, as a show goer/stage gawker it bugs the shit out of me watching a band with the drummer as lead vocalist. Don't matter how good the vocals are. It is primarily a visual thing. I like to be able to clearly see the lead singer singing and/or shouting and a drum kit and associated movements to operate it totally obscure that. It doesn't bother me its backing or switch off sorts of vocals or perhaps a song or two sang by the drummer, but somehow I just enjoy a bands set less if the primary vocalist is behind a drum kit all night.

For the record the role of your larynx and its visual impact on your shows never let me down in the least. You fellas are quite animated and I never get bored visually watching you loud fucks.

Well, now yer just splitting hairs. Toe-MAY-Toe, Toe-MAH-Toe, it still sounds good!

Maybe really being animated is the solution to how silly drummers look when they're singing. I dunno.
