Anyone care to elaborate on any of these? Some of them I never heard of.

I mentioned Crews because he tends to write about tough, poor characters. Obssessed with strength/the body: Perfection (boxers, etc) and imperfection (freaks, etc). Men pushing themselves to their limit and so forth.

He's also been through some shit in his life and could kick your ass.

George Pelecanos is a good contemporary heir to the mantle...

and I do get the feeling he's kind of a bad ass, though probably a nice guy, in real life. I think he used to teach martial arts to kids.
