By the time I'd heard it I'd already heard what I'd considered to be the extremes in music and was already familiar with a lot of the stuff that was influenced by Beefheart. So it wasn't that alien, It was just hearing where a lot of stuff I'd already liked was rooted.

And, like a lot of people who like Beefheart, Trout Mask isn't my favorite.
You call me a hater like that's a bad thing

My roomate borrowed his dad's suv so we could go pick up my amp equipment from my parents house, they both lived out in the suburbs, on the way to his parents house we stopped at a Media Play(I don't think any exist anymore) He went inside stole Trout Mask Replica and Stereolab"s margerine eclipse and I swear to god I think that is one of the worst albums I've ever heard in my life(tmr) I fucking hate Captain Beefheart.

Probably the reason I bought it came form a painful teenage desire to listen to "difficult" music.
It completely wrongfooted me at first and I didn't like it. But I still remember the first ever album I bought, the Kids Are Alright soundtrack, really upsetting me as well so that wasn't such a surprise.
But I left it on my little old black portable Bush CD player/ Radio thing in the background while I was reading in my room and occasional bits would make me prick up my ears and think "Hmmm. That's pretty rocking." and after about five listens, in this subliminal kind of a way, I loved it.
That's why I don't buy into it as this great esoteric piece that you have to slave over unlocking. It's a brilliant blast of noise. It's all about feel. I reckon it's got to be the most "free-jazz" rock record.

I'd heard and really got into Safe As Milk, Spotlight Kid and Strictly Personal before I heard this one so I was partially prepared for it.
My main memory of the first listen was that I laughed a lot. Not in a 'what's this shit' kinda way but more that I was happy that this guy wasn't posing, he truly didn't give a fuck. I thought bits of it were great and bits of it were a little self-indulgent but as a whole I enjoyed it.
I had to turn it off about 5 songs from the end though cos the sound of my girlfriend bitching about it got too much.

This has cheered me up enormously. And also endeared Plant to me a lot more, which I'm sure he's going to be pleased about when he next logs on.

The whole article is perfect, including the descriptions of Beefheart, and especially these images:

He went to bed about a decade ago, or whenever he sold his soul to the bankers and the elites.
