808 State - uses a TR-808 drum machine
Pitchshifter - enjoys pitch-shifting the vocals down

is this really all just kind of lame? so as to say "yea, thats the jist of it, that's pretty much our MO, we run guitars through sunn amps / use lots of 808 drums / pitch shift the vocals way down, all the time"

or is it a tasteful display of modesty, so as to say "hey, no use in trying to hide it, there's one single machine at the core of our 'sound' and it's no secret what that machine is..."

That's pretty much it, unless your band is called Alesis Hydroverb. You could be as unlucky as this chap. Does anyone else do this consciously, name a band after something lying around the studio?
