I had a drum dial for years, then one day I dropped it, shattered the dial and fcked it good. I never went and bought another one, though it's probably because I have been tuning drums every day for about (cough, cough) years.
I am going to borrow a video camera a do some drum tuning videos and other basic technique things here soon.
Promise.

Patrick, did you film those drum tuning lessons?

13Not yet. I will do that this week. I have a couple of open nights at the studio.
I just taught a young drummer how to tune his drums today... one of my students.
Watch for videos soon!

14I will!
although i have some sort of an ok tuning technique, I always wanna see new ones. it takes me way too long to make my set sound the way I want to.
btw, I took a video of myself drumming to show you my left hand technique and the "hitting the thigh with every snare hit" thing. Still can't get rid of that. Maybe I need to place my hi hat more to the left?
oh wait, I'm hijacking another thread. I'll bump the other one or PM you.

15Drum dial=smoke and mirrors.
I own one. If you're totally lost it can be helpful. There is no replacement for learning how to tune drums. Hearing pitch on each lug. Comparing pitch top to bottom, knowing the relationship between top and bottom, experimenting, finding good intervals between toms and snare etc.
Coated heads seem really in style right now. I see trends come and go and almost everyone uses coated heads. About eight or nine years ago it was all pinstripes. As far as I can tell the coated ones are darker with a good ring at the tom's fundamental (depending on tuning of course), clear and pinstripe heads seem to have a hotter attack, more treble off the stick and not as full or dark of a ring.
