You don't have to register in Illinois as any party. But you have to claim a party before you vote. Illinois is going to Obama (and funny enough, you hardly ever see Republican candidate signs around in Chicago), so I made a conscious decision to be independent since I know where this state is going. If it were a tight race, I probably would have voted for Obama. Though, I'd have second thoughts about it afterwards.

Georgia has a sheet you fill out with your name address, etc. At the top you check a box for dem or rep. I'm not registered as either.
