I second the strong praise for "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed". Also, I heard the Allman Brothers versions before I heard Muddy Waters or Elmore James so they helped me get the link.

Why did they kick Dickey Betts out? Substance abuse related or "creative differences"?

Crap, but I have been played some pretty decent live jams by my old drummer who was a hardcore Allman Brothers fan.
I even went and saw them live twice with him. It was very boring for the most part but he likes them so much he almost made up for it by being so into it. Almost.

FYI, "Elizabeth Reed" was the name on the tombstone overlooking the grave on which Dickey Betts once boned somebody in a Macon cemetery.

I love the Allman Brothers Band. I agree that they are a hippie band--but they are Southern, coked-up hippies with a mean blues edge. In other words, my favorite kind.

I wrote these guys off for years because of their fuckhead followers (especially one roommate I had for 2 years who played hippie jam band shit all the time). If you can separate the work from people like my roommate it's fantastic stoner rock.

And even if you don't like to smoke weed, it's nice to put on while cooking or something. The only other band that I like who pulls off this style of music better for me is My Morning Jacket, and that's simply because I like the vocals more. I can do without the soulful redneck blues vocals (i.e. tied to the whipping post).
