Cheap n Cheerful UK Studios?

Hi all,

It's time for yet another 'recommend me a studio' thread. I'm sure that this will be kerbled immediately but I couldn't find what I was looking for with the search.

Basically my band are looking to record again sometime in the next few months and we're looking for a certain kind of studio.

Here's the list of 'must-haves':

Analogue recording
An engineer who doesn't want everything to sound like Phil Collins or the Killers
Be in the UK (we're based in Hereford but distance shouldn't be too much of an issue
Must be able to record the whole band together basically live
Be relatively cheap

The best place we've come across so far is Dubrek (thanks to honeyisfunny), was wondering if there was anything else along these lines anyone here knows of.

Ta people.

Well, all I can really do is back up honeyisfunny re: the quality and friendliness of dubrek. A friend's setting up an analogue studio here in Nottingham, but it's not ready yet... I know another guy who'll do a very good job of recording you but it will be all digital. So yeah, Dubrek's your best bet!

He went to bed about a decade ago, or whenever he sold his soul to the bankers and the elites.

I thought it was, but given that Edd had said that it fit his criterion of analogue recording, I assumed they must offer that service....

I'll check.

They offer 8 track if you want it but to be honest, you might as well go with the in house system there which is all really great mics and a really great old desk but they record everything to a Mackie system. It sounds really good, they really have their shit down there plus they're good folks for helping when needed with the creative process and just being useful sources of info for things as you record. I can't say enough nice things about them. It does smell a bit in there though.

Toerag.

I recorded there 'bout twelve years ago when it was in French Place. The studio shared space with a costume and props company, so the whole place was just filled with crazy stuff. Also, there was a vast amount of 1970s jazz mags there - I'm talking literally floor to ceiling piles of porn. With this array of dusty Joe Meek-ish 60s gear in the middle. Great place. He's a little bit more organised and expensive now though, these days...

If you PM and give me your email address I can send you a couple of tracks that he recorded for my friend's band, which sound about five times better than that White Stripes record.
