I voted for Coltrane on the strength of what he released in 1965 alone. Sun Ship and First Mediations are two of my favorite albums ever.
Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler would be me next choices.

14Oh man, it's Coltrane. I like the works of Ayler and Coltrane, but mostly I like the ideas within their records. With Coltrane, especially on Interstellar Space, he reaches that rare harmony of creativity and skill that makes him unmatchable.

15The guy who played the saxophone solo on Ronnie Biggs' version of "Belsen Was a Gas".
He's got some licks!

16If Dex is on there, you should add Art Pepper as well. He deserves to be in that group. As does Sonny Rollins.
That said, I'm a coltrane/rollins man myself.

17Poll needs Pharoah Sanders.
I went with Ornette, but was torn between him and Coltrane. Sanders would have made the choice even more difficult.

18Wayne Shorter should be on the list as well. He took the Coltrane legacy and crafted a romantic, melodic beauty all his own.
