but the only chance I had to see Fugazi was in Tallahassee in 1995. Had tickets and everything. Showed up only to find out the venue had oversold tickets for the show and the fire marshal shut them down.

Why I didn't go see them somewhere else after that is a complete mystery to me. But, I must say I missed out on that one, and all the other times Figazi played in the area and I failed to go.

A tornado ripped the roof off of the venue I was supposed to go see R.E.M. at. Shortly thereafter, Bill Berry left the band. Apparently a wise decision as I went to see them a few years ago and it was awful. All was not lost, as I attended a smaller concert that night and was introduced to the Dismemberment Plan.


Due to friendships and convenience, the Dismemberment Plan and Fugazi are probably the two bands I've seen most often.

I saw Stevie Ray Vaughn open for Robert Plant back when I was a freshman in high school (1986). I had no fuckin' clue that he was what some would call a legend. I sort of regret not really paying attention or appreciating his set more. I remember him being good but to my ears it sounded like the Santana Jams video on youtube and I was only there crossing my fingers for some ZEPPELIN SONGS!!!!1111.

Oh yeah, I also was lucky enough to catch a few of the jazz greats while they were still alive, at various Chicago Jazz Fests over the past 2 decades or so.

Miles Davis (he was wacked on crack--horrible show, just terrible)

Max Roach (just amazing. At the drop of a hat he could go from a smooth swing to a raucous, chaotic explosion, then get right back to swinging like nothing ever happened)

I also saw Screamin' Jay Hawkins at Biddy Muilligan's in about 1989. That was a fun show.

They still have a chance to reunite, so I guess that doesn't really count. But still, in a packed bar as opposed to the Vic or Riv or wherever they last played Chicago...


I saw them at The Black Cat in May 2000. They were unremarkable and Kathleen Hanna's rambling idiotic interjections in the form of rapor-esque piercing shrieks made me want to punch her in the face.

Hush now, Kathleen Hanna is one of the good ones. She's a really nice person, really funny and more intelligent than you think. Plus she's hot too.

I saw one of the Julie Ruin shows, before they decided to name it Le Tigre. Sadie Benning was still in the band.
Her leaving is what sent them into the downward crap spiral, that and they started buying real equipment. Bad move. The reason it sounded good is because it wasn't perfect, you know? It was all chunked together using old, broken samplers and whatnot. That's what gave it personality. Bands never get that.
But even CRAP Kathleen Hanna is involved in is way more interesting than most bands out there.
