This is ridiculous. "GOAT" in stencil and a nude woman and some flames is not even in the same league as Fugazi's collages, Washington monument, and cool two-piece packaging.

Uhh, why not compare Goat to any of the first three Fugazi releases, then move on to the other TJL releases. For instance, thought Down was not the band's strongest moment, it had cool art on it, as did Liar, a number of the 7" releases, etc. Collages were fine, but less interesting to me. Taste, I suppose. Likewise, TJL lyrics ruled over Fugazi's pedantic laments. In the end we are talking about taste where this particular issue is concerned (I think that TJL were objectively better players).

Arguing about cover art is probably silly, yes. But this lyrics issue? Seriously? The Jesus Lizard's lyrics are mostly stupid, save the occasional cool concept like "Lady Shoes." I wouldn't change a word of them, and they're sung just as they should be, but I can't think of one thing David Yow sang that carries much weight without him wailing it and those three guys playing along. This is true of almost all rock lyrics. Fugazi can be exception to this rule, producing something that is worth reading on a sheet of paper. Not all the time, of course; 13 Songs, Repeater, and even The Argument have their share of "pedantic laments." I usually skip "Merchandise" and "Greed" to spare myself a wince.

But when they cut that out, they were better than anyone, ever. "Irony is the refuge of the educated / always complaining but they never quit / cool's eternal but it's always dated" is probably the coolest thing I have ever heard someone sing in a rock song.

Bernardo wrote:This is missing the whole point of what a rock band is about, to me. The interplay and arrangements in both bands were perfect, you couldn´t replace Lally´s or Brendan´s parts in Fugazi with anything played by someone of "greater musicianship" without sinking the songs completely.

Yeah. In ten pages I don't think anyone has argued, or will argue, that TJL needed a funkier rhythm section or that what Fugazi really needed was David Yow out front.

"Wheelchair Epidemic."

It's okay, but it's the weakest moment of that song. "Brendan #1," now there's a cool tom part.

i like that part of the song. i wouldn't call it weak, just because it gives the song a minute for tension to build to bring it back to the kick in the ribs of the verse.
