Not everyone thinks like you, asswipe. Some people just want to help people. You know, to make THEM feel a bit better. If feeling good about yourself is a by-product of helping somebody out, then so be it.
"Asswipe"?
What the fuck is your problem? It is obvious that you can read, at least at a primitive level. If you have to move your lips and pronounce each word to yourself in order to comprehend the meaning of the sentence as a whole, don't be self-conscious. Go for it. You might look stupid, but it is better than being stupid.

Oh, Christ! You're right. Sorry, Dill.
I read it like this: Being generous because it makes you feel good to be generous is not a good reason to be generous.
Didn't see that extra "not" in there. My apologies.
It is I, who is the asswipe!
Apology PM sent.

483I read it the same way. On behalf of any other confused spectators, thanks for clearing it up!
And, welcome to the forum, Dill!

I agree. Anything anyone ever does, even the most ostensibly selfless act, could be construed as selfish.
If it make me feel better about life to have made you feel better about life, that doens't change the fact that it was probably for the greater good that I made you feel better about life.
So what, so what, you boring little cunt.
That was a great retort just now, Dill. (Sometimes it's funny to watch someone really get it.)

485i wanna apologize for being ridiculously over the top. i realize the removing a person from their words, removes the context of the delivery and i feel that a lot of what i say is then misinterpreted. i'm not saying this is the excuse, because sometimes i really am an asshole.
to come clean: it is not crap to give a homeless person change. the outcome and the action itself may or may not add up to something special. if a person is hunry, the least another person can do is give a handful of chump change.
i do give money when i have it. when i don't have it, i've nothing to give.
apologies all around. i'm not a cock. i'm not cold hearted. i'm not mean spirited. not that any of you can tell. you see no actions as it is, so my only representation is what i say.
to be honest, i can be a cock. i shoot my mouth off. it's a bad habit of mine running off at the lip. making jokes no one wants. which may or may not actually be funny regarding the atmosphere of delivery and the receptiveness of the listener.
i know i can be cold when i feel i'm wasting time or energy.
so, generally, not a cock, just a loudmouth.
sorry again for the uproaring of any panties.

486"Attitude" by Charles Swindoll
The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.
Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company ... a church ... a home.
The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable.
The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude ... I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you ... we are in charge of our Attitudes.

488No big deal. I'm far from perfect. I'll admit that, every once in a while, I question my unquestioning magnanimousness. This occasionally happens when I drop a deuce on a (apparently) willfully-retarded pre-crusty or white hippy with dreads in their twenties. Little five points in atlanta seems to be their mecca.
Through the hazy mists of time, I seem to recall one of these dreadful chanting hippies who would do a writhing Al Gore-like arrhythmic, hypokinetic dance with a rusty tambourine. There was another one that occasionally accompanied him on flute that I called Sir Prancealot because that's what he did. Heuristic resource allocation algorithms never enter my mind. It's an automatic process. I try to convince myself that they were just born retarded and can't find their way back home.

489wow, i almost feel bad for posting that story umpteen pages ago if it wasn't for the fact that it made such a damn good thread...
and i guess i never stated my opinion on the whole matter...
when i moved to northern california years ago ('96-02) i was overwhelmed by the multitude of homeless people teeming the streets...i genuinely felt bad for them...
but then they started to pick up that i wasn't from around the area and frequently used to play their pity hard as they could and in quite a few instances victimized me (meaning they made me feel like an extreme jerk and threatened violence to me, a broke student who had a hard time finding work in CA), and as a result i quit giving handouts because of that...CA really needs to institute better homeless programs...stronger programs at that...
but all in all i've run into too many scammers out there and it made me a tad bitter on the whole subject...if someone's really hurting i'll do what i can to help...but for the most part, no...
