(I can't ask this question of normal people, since normal people generally have CD collections of under a thousand)
But is there anybody out there (who has decided to keep your jewel cases for maximum CD-browsing enjoyment), who has come up with an aesthetically pleasing way to store their collection?
???
(p.s. We already have records covered, thank you very much)

4I know this thread is mostly about jewel-case storage. I have one of these:
http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Pr ... ODID=67282
... which is fine. Sturdy metal, lower-profile than wooden shelves, folds flat. But being from the Container Store, it's really pricey. Anyone live in NYC and want to buy one secondhand?
I don't go for the CD wallets. They're shitty if you want to browse aimlessly, and also shitty if you want to organize, since every time you buy another one, you have to rearrange everything.
I'm pretty low on space, so was thinking of jettisoning all the cases and going this way:
http://www.ideastreamproducts.com/vaultz/CDCab.html
Pretty space-efficient (165 per drawer), still sort of allows for browsing, and you can store a collection of 660 for $80-something.

5I built shelves in a spare closet, and also bought one of those revolving floor units. They all fit in the closet.

6Tall solid wood CD shelves from Gothic Cabinet Craft. Not an ideal solution, obviously, since they're already filling up. But they're attractive.

7In teetering piles on IKEA pine garage shelving, unsorted, unalphabetisized. I can usually find anything within forty minutes or so, though.
It was a proud moment when a lady I was seeing came round and said 'You've got Fugazi next to Hall & Oates'. Welcome to my world, sweetheart.
