No, not that guy, the older guy, the crochety old man.

I also like the Conspiracy Jews (as I call them)

Ahhh...The Jewish Task Force. I love those guys. The little guy in the sunglasses disguise is usually accompanied by a huge, arms-folded dude, who nods his head in agreement.

Speaking of public access, if you really want to see some awfulness, tune in to a show called Filthy Rich. No format, bad bands and rappers, people just jumping up and down in costume; mind blowing. There's also a guy who poses with naked chicks in between performances of his horrible blues band.

Vistalites are drums that are made of clear acrylic.

I just put a deposit on some old black-tint Vistalites. They're Bonham's sizes and I was told that the bass drum comes with it's own case and has better spurs/legs than whatever came with it originally. The kit will need new heads and all the rest, but still, I'm pretty thrilled !!!! :D

PS...pics to follow !

Awesome. Good luck!

I will be continuing on mine now that the weather is getting better. I'm doing it in the garage, and there is no heat. There will be pictures.

Not too sure. Cracks? I guess check to make sure that the seams are good. Being that they're a hard acrylic, I don't see them warping too much. The kick drum legs that came with that kit are pure shit, so whatever he's got now is probably better if you're going to be playing the kit. If you're using it as a vintage showpiece type deal, you might want the original spurs. Oh, check the beveled bearing edges for chips, too. Those are bad and can effect the sound.

Whatever you do, don't mount the rack tom on the kick drum. Use a separate snare stand or some other method to avoid putting stress on the kick.

There are other Vistalite owners on this forum who are infinitely more knowledgable than I. I would suggest contacting them/him. I'll give you a hint: His name rhymes with dontfearthebingo.

I'll do the snare stand thing for the rack tom. It looks way cooler anyway.
And...Won'tplaytheBingo ?

Hey, man.... sorry so late to the party! I was in the studio...

that's way more nerve wracking to me since I barely know what I am doing, but the record sounds good, despite my lack of experience...

that's neither here nor there, though.

Here are some things to look for:
Make sure that there aren't any cracks around where he drilled to mount the new kick drum legs. When people start drilling vistalites, I start getting nervous.

Also, as Venkman said, look for cracks and chips out of the bearing edges. Missing lugs, tension rods and hoops can be easily replaced through drummaker.com or any of a number of vintage Ludwig parts dealers. I just bought some bass drum spur mounts for a maple kit on eBay for like $10, shipped.

Look for chipped bearing edges or hazing in the finish. People don't realize you can't clean plastic with solvents sometimes, and they make goo. Very bad.

New heads can also be gotten for near-wholesale prices from Drummaker.com. I am about to order heads for four kits (tops and bottoms on two!) and I am only spending about $300. You could easily spend that on two kits (or one and a half in Chicago) buying a new set of heads.

I like the coated Emperors on top and clear ambassadors on the bottom for Vistalites. If you're not a super hard hitter, you might want to try coated ambassador tops. I like the P3 Powerstroke for kick drum batter and an Ambassador with a felt strip for the resonant side.

There was much discussion here a few months ago about the Bonham kick drum sound, with a Medium weight batter head on his kick drum (I am guessing Emperor or silver/black dotted ambassador) and someone followed that advice and HATED the sound they got.

I am recording a kit like that now, and it doesn't sound like John Bonham (or even that great) while you're standing next to it in the room, but in my boomy live room with ribbon mics for room mics and Neumann 184s for overheads, it sounds like John Bonham.

Good luck, Koren! Keep us posted!
