Depends if you know the person. IF you know the person, it may be construed by that other person as a bit of an insult and a compliment mixed together. IF you don't, it is a safe tribute. I also think it is good to give your pet a real name that you would not give to your children.

For instance, in keeping with both of these rules, I would totally name my pet dog or cat Colin, after Newman, if I had a pet dog or cat.

i have a cat called lenny after lenny bruce. it really suits him but i think hes getting bullied by other neighbourhood cats, especially this fat little fuck called jeffrey. i'd rather have a cat called lenny than jeffrey. N/C

I have a Black Moor fancy goldfish called King Tubby. My girlfriend's is called Mr Majeika. King Tubby is better. I call the other one Mad Professor when she's not around. I don't even particularly like dub. But not crap still.

my wife and i prefer pet names after inanimate objects; hence naming our dog "book." although his full name is "mr. bookman" and this is reflected on his tag.

other names i've heard recently that i liked are "satchel" (shar pei/cattle dog mix) and "tugboat."

i knew a girl who named her cat "john frusciante of the red hot chili peppers." the former is not crap.

naming your cat "amy winehouse" would be crap.

I have had 2 cats named Lopez. The original Lopez was named after some Phillies pitcher from the eighties. The current Lopez was named after the first Lopez.

I had a dog named Bowie, a nice bi-eye Husky whom I miss dearly.

the Hi-Fi have a freind who go's by the name Pat the Jerk, which is a funny punk rock name as Pat, is a really nice guy... a while back I lived at a house with a kitty named Cat the Jerk, which was funny as Cat the Jerk really was a jerk...

a friend has a dachshund named Lonesome Dave, named for Dave Peverett of Foghat.

my kid named one of her frogs Rupert, after the actor Rupert Grint in the Harry Potter movies. it turned out to be a female frog so now she's Rupretta, but Rupert Grint is such a good name, isn't it?
