That's not all that bad price-wise. These were pretty expensive when they were new.

Yeah, I saw it ended, it's crazy.
I didn't know they were pretty expensive when they were manufactured, but a week ago they went for 150-250!

I bought mine in '94 for roughly $300.

this is what a technician of byerdynamic sent me. any germans? someone please translate it:
"Laut alter Stuecklisten wurde im M380 das damalige DT770/990 System mit 600 Ohm Impedanz (von 1985) verbaut. Um etwa 1992 herum wurde dann die 250Ohm Variante dieses Wandlers in Kopfhoerer eingebaut, ob die allerdings auch mal im M380 gelandet ist (eventuell dann ohne Uebertrager), habe ich leider nicht rausfinden koennen...."

Here is my attempt:

"In accordance with older stocklists, from 1985 the M380 would have been built with the existing DT770/990 system having 600 Ohm impedance. Around 1992 the 250 variation of this transformer was incorporated into headphones but whether it also landed in the M380 (without any certainty) I was not able to find out..."

Interesting.

I have at home one M380 mic and a pair of DT770 headphones.

I'll see if I can hook up one side of the headphones to a mic amp and listen to how it sounds. I reckon the DT990's would be better to test this since they're open back (the DT770's are closed and would make the mic omni).

Since the M380 is out of reach for most people there is no reason why you couldn't DIY a mic out of replacement DT990/770 insert/capsule. Yeah.

not that I'm german but it means that according to their data, the sytem in the 380 was from the DT770/990 headphone this 600 Ohm system will have had a transformer. From 1992 there was a 250Ohm system in the headphones and the technican isn't sure whether they were used in the 380 (if they were they would have been used without a transformer according to the tec).

I believe they did as both my 380 (one dead, I've got a guy who is trying to fix it (he reckons the magnet has been displaced, but he thinks it's a fiddly job and if it works will charge quite a bit but it'll be cheaper than getting another one) have no transformers.

So anybody compared the M380 (perfect mic for Squeez box btw) to the Opus thing? I've only tried the opus82 on toms and quite like them. anybody got another suggestion for a dark/big sounding dynamic that doesn't cost the earth (like the RE20/MD421/MD441 over here in the uk).
