The Butcher series from the 80's was supposed to be the cat's PJs.
It was Peavey's answer to Marshall, Randall, etc. (metal stuff) and the heads were all tube and used decent circuits.
I had a 4x12 cab from that era that I just sold last year that was loaded with Celestions and sounded pretty decent.
It was definitely better built than the flyweight Marshall 4x12 cabs of the era.
My first amp ever was a Peavey, and anyone in Rockford knows why....
Backstage Plus 1x10 solid state combo, more push/pull knobs and pre/post configurations than I ever seen on any non-Peavey before or since.
All configurations sounded like butt, PLUS the un-usable reverb set on 1 or higher caused MASSIVE feedback regardless of humbucker or single coil, even across the room facing the other way.

si! haha! bandit!
decade: you can play with the knobs for ten years, and you will not get a good sound!
deuce: is worth two dollars
5150: if you can swim from puerto rico (51st state) to hawaii, and crawl onto sandy beach w/water in your ears, and then you listen to latter-day van halen through an am radio, it will sound like this amp

You really don't know what you are saying.
vtm head (i have the 120 watt) is really good amp, i compared it with some other amps (orange rockerverb, hiwatt dr custom 50, new mesa "shitletto" and f 50, matchless chieftain, marshall jcm 800)...you can buy this head in usa for more or less 200 dollars! it's incredible!

43I have a Peavey VMP-2 tube mic preamp. Fantastic! The EQ's (which are great on vocals) are smooth as butter. I usually don't like to EQ vocals until they are tracked, but these EQ's (especially in the highs) are so fucking smooth...
I've also owned a TNT-150 bass amp. Nice! Heavy mofo, though. I ended up giving it to my friend for helping me move. Went with a sans amp. I really like the sans amp. Great zeuhl bass sound. Absolutely gorkeulhzenht.
I think Peavey makes some fine gear. Not crap, depending on what it is.

44seems like this peavy thread keeps coming back to life. it won't die. like a peavy.
anyone have the ones they made for awhile that are the transi-tube technology? where it's all solid state but supposedly gives you the tube sound?
well, h'ok, that-a, we all-a know, is a crap statement. but those particular amps, while not sounding all that tubish, especially at the loudest of volumes, do have a distinct character all their own which i happen to enjoy. and as mentioned before the peavy make is economical and built like a rock.
thus earning my not crap vote.

45I owned a Peavey Classic 50 combo a while back. That little amp had an alright sound to it, I only needed an equalizer to help with sound, and was easier to lug around than the half stack which I eventually upgraded to. That amp took such a beating as well. After the other guitar player in my band decided to be a dick about our tape after we recorded this EP I took my frustration out on the Peavey. The wood on this amp is not so great. In a pair of Vans brand tennis shoes I managed to completely destroy the entire frame of said Peavey. What amazed me was that the little bastard still worked perfectly even though the damn thing was sagging in the middle to the point where I had to duct tape a block of wood to the bottom so that it's guts didn't fall out.
Precisely why I bought one...and..
I run a Peavey Classic 50 along side a '63 Tremolux, I don't use the Peavey tone circuit because it really does sound like shit, the circuit is a joke, instead I run a GT Trio preamp into it...this sounds 10000% better than the Mesa or Marshall power amps I had before.
There are fair worse crimes in the amp world...Marshall for instance..!!

here are some pretty awesome pics, i hope you don't mind me posting this link.. if you do mind, i implore you to moderate this post out of existence.
also like the Peavey, i am to commend you on some so tight pants! now, i am not to say you are good-looking man, because such thing is not for the saying. BUT. these picture with the chitarra of the flying, she is maybe need to be made of the big poster size, and maybe she is to replace the 10 commandments on the Austin lawn when these Corte Suprema are to do their business. such the great picture!

47we all know peavey ain't the best. Here's the deal folks, I've heard awesome sounds coming out of peavey amps. Why do you ask? Because the players were good. A person who plays well is still going to sound pretty good even through a peavey. 'Nuff said whiney shitty musicians.

48I recently got a chance to play a Peavey Cirrus bass. I'm happy with what I've got, so I'm not gonna buy one, but this thing was easily comparable with all those super-geek handmade basses that cost 3x as much. Go Peavey.
If it wasn't for landlords, there would have been no Karl Marx.

49I borrowed a Peavey Raptor from a friend of mine when I was learning to play guitar. It was just like a Squier and sounded okay with loads of fuzzy covering up the fact that it wouldn't stay in tune for a jillion dollars money.
Their T-60 guitars are pretty sweet though, even though they weigh a metric ton. They've got metal nuts. Metal Nuts, I Tell You!
