Last night I saw The Musical Box, a Genesis tribute band (!).

Fuck yeah! I saw them about 6-7 months ago. Fucking brilliant!!! The PG and PC guys even LOOK like PG and PC.

The mellotron is fake. It's a wood thing painted white with a MIDI keyboard controller. I was in the front row, so I was able to notice this. This is smart. I saw them at a art-rock festival, and the previous year, every band had a mellotron. There were so many technical difficulties. Those things really should stay in the studio... The difference between a digital sampler and a mellotron in a live performance is that the digital sampler is reliable and sounds good (and has a better response. You can hold a note longer than 8 seconds).

I saw the Selling England By The Pound show. I really want to see the LLDOB show. Carpet Crawlers is like the coolest song ever. They never play out west, though.

The Musical Box actually have members of Genesis who consulted on how the show should be and lent them the original slides and some of the original instruments. They're about as kosher as a Genesis recreation act can be. FANTASTIC!!!

I have to admit to liking some 80's Genesis stuff, particularly "That's All."

Wow... I love Genesis, but I can't stand any of that 80's crap. If that was the Genesis stuff I was into, I'd probably vote crap too... At that point, they became an adult oriented rock band. And not adult in the cool porno way.

Yeah... "A Trick of the Tail"... A perfect progressive rock album. My favorite thing is the end song, which touches on all of the key musical themes used throught the album, and ties them all together. Not only great songwriting, but great album writing. Every song is exactly where it should be.

And of course, the 72-75 PG era Genesis is great too. Timeless music.

you know, i have one of the first LPs and i think its pretty horrible other than a few cool basslines...

I think we might be in the land of confusion here, but I'm not sure. By first LP, do you mean the 1969 release "Genesis and Revelation". Because that is crap. Or do you mean the early 80's "Genesis" self titled album, with "Momma" and "That's All". Because that is also crap, and over a decade after Genesis's first album (the title is misleading, but they became born again crap at that point, so maybe there is meaning in it).

If you like those basslines, you might be a closet Mike and the Mechanics fan.

I'm in my early 30's, so for a long time, I didn't hear the early stuff. To me, Genesis was the 80's stuff. Come to think, I did hear PG was in the band back in the day, but didn't care, although I liked the early PG solo albums for a long time. Then I bought "Foxtrot" a coupla years ago, and I thought it was brilliant, and I ended up getting 10 Genesis albums from 70-81. They're all really great.

This is the kind of crap that you accidentally step in. Then, when you feel the warm wet sensation underneath your foot, you look down to see the horrific sight of the brown mess squirting out through the spaces between your toes. Which, consequently brings you down to your hands and knees where you begin to spew vomit across the floor. And standing next to you is a dog (genesis) proudly standing by his creation, admiring it as if it were some sort of art.
" You're a janitor is that what you want to do with you're life?" I didn't say anything, I didn't have to.

Oh Jeeze! This is funny! I'm in tears here. As much as I love Genesis (1970-1981), I must appreciate the passion in this post. I think that Genesis dog would be a mighty New Foundland, and that brown mess would be quite substantial.

Yeah, Foxtrot, Selling England, and LLDOB tend to be people's faves. They're all albums with PG. LLDOB is remarkably influential. Does anyone else notice how the vocals on "carpet crawlers" sound like Dinosaur Jr.? I mean, it sounds like J. Mascis is singing on that one...

The thing I don't like about LLDOB is the Eno production. The vocals are so loud, and all of the ring modulator special effects are really noisy. It's not a warm sounding album at all. But it is very futuristic, while retaining some artifacts of medieval-ness. I notice these values in Eno's solo albums too, which I enjoy, but they lack warmth and feeling.
