Although as I said I haven't tried one, it looks to me that these things are getting overpriced.

I just got the TGX-50 and have not put it up against the 380 yet. Hopefully I'll have time to do that in the coming month and I'll give you my impressions.

I had an Opus 65 which, according to Beyer, was the same mic as the TGX-50, and I've used the M380 as well. Not side by side, but enough to form an opinion. They're both good, but the 50/65 is more of a normal, modern kick drum mic, it has a bit of hype on the 'slap' area of the spectrum. Not as much as say a D112, but more that type of sound than the 380, which I found darker. They're lower output than the 380 as well.

I gotta say... as much as like my M 380 I don't see what the major fuss is about. It's a decent mic that gets a decent kick/bass sound... nothing amazing. I bet there's a cheaper mic out there (Heil, EV etc.) that'll do better.

The most useful feature for me is the high output. I like that it doesn't need a mic pre. I just plug it into balanced line-in on my MotU.

well it tickles my fancy.

plus i love my dt770ies

Yes it's the fig8 dynamic part thats rare and unusual. For me anyways.

Are there any other fig8 Large dynamic mics? I can't think of any.

What about this whole capsule replacement we were talking about?
If the capsule is a DT770's, then we have a solution for the blown M380. Plus, the Opus 65 looks the same as the M380, is it really the same size?
It might be worth a try to buy one and replace the capsule with a dt770.

anyone tried that already?
