This made me laugh out loud.

Yeah, between this post and the "Hey Tmidgett" thread, this forum has been very job-threatening today.

I haven't read the Hey Tmidgett thread up to this point, and now I am curious, yet very afraid to do so, since I am also at work.

Someone once said that atheism is an ideology the way that not stamp collecting is a hobby. Atheism means you don't believe in god; it doesn't mean you're right wing or left wing or fascist or communist or tolerant or intolerant; it means that you haven't seen compelling evidence of god (actually, one problem with the term "atheist" is that it has different meanings to different people. But essentially what it means "not a theist").

If you go the JREF forums, for example, you'll find many people who don't believe in god (and a few who do) but have very divergent views about politics and other stuff.

eta: from the Wikipedia article on atheism; this seems like a pretty good definition to me:
atheism, as a philosophical view, is the position that either affirms the nonexistence of gods[1] or rejects theism.[2] When defined more broadly, atheism is the absence of belief in deities,[3] alternatively called nontheism.[4] Although atheism is often equated with irreligion, some religious philosophies, such as secular theology and some varieties of Buddhism such as Theravada, either do not include belief in a personal god as a tenet of the religion, or actively teach nontheism.

Many self-described atheists are skeptical of all supernatural beings and cite a lack of empirical evidence for the existence of deities. Others argue for atheism on philosophical, social or historical grounds. Although many self-described atheists tend toward secular philosophies such as humanism[5] and naturalism,[6] there is no one ideology or set of behaviors to which all atheists adhere.[7]

Thank you, I've never once in my life made any claims about God's existence except that I don't believe he exists, just like most religious people I know don't say they know god exists they just have faith and believe he does and act accordingly. I don't think agnosticism and atheism are mutually exclusive.

Gack!

Theism - Belief in a god or gods.

A, prefix - Not or without

Atheism - Not believing in a god or gods, or believing there is not a god or gods.

This is some fundamental shit that you're doggedly refusing to understand.

at least according to my Webster's

Bullshit. Seriously? Unless you've got one fucked up Webster's, the one with the crappiest, least correct definition of atheism ever, it at least tells you atheism is disbelief in OR denial of god. Quit cherry picking.

I used to call myself an atheist, but I realized that to a lot of people, an atheist is someone who is certain there is no god. I'm not absolutely positive god doesn't exist, it's just that so far I haven't seen any compelling evidence. It seems much more likely to me that the religions I know of were made up--god didn't create man, man created god.

So I'm not certain there is no god, but I'm definitely not a theist. Therefore, I'm an atheist. But I hesitate to call myself that, even though that's what I am, because to many atheism means something different.
