Yeah, I keep going back and forth. I can empathise because I too know what it's like being shy and awkward.

But on the other hand I would never turn my head away from a friend who came over to talk to me. Especially someone I already know has very little self-esteem.

Over the line from "shy" to "markedly pathological". Being reticent and nervous is all well and good but if she engages in this sort of behavior it's more like control freakery -- if she can't handle so mild a situation she should stay in the fucking house and not form relationships. That's not even a way to treat people you don't like. And her friend isn't pulling her weight either, leaving both of you hanging in the wind like that.

My advice is not so much "some people suck, don't let it get to you" as "this person has a major problem and isn't worth engaging with at really any level." Your read of the situation is not at fault in the least.

I did this today as well, after not eating from Monday morning until Wednesday evening due to illness. I spent yesterday drinking water/Pedialyte and consuming small servings of food, so today I made some red borscht served with substantial dark rye bread, which was the closest thing that I could find to pumpernickel in the entire East Bay area. I guess I had better learn how to bake my own pumpernickel bread.

Tonight, I am going to see Replicator play in Oakland. They're playing with Suzanne*Silver from Sicily, so Ben and I will both have to be careful to not use any Fake Italian tonight, lest I accidentally offend someone.
