I saw God Himself, and his boy Jesus, at a Melvins show.

It was truly Him, because He performed the miracle of miracles: getting a buyback from the bartender at the Knitting Factory.

I had been a fan of the Melvins for many years previous, but seeing the divine presence at one of their shows sort of cemented it for me.
I make music/I also make pretty pictures

Even when you factor in all the CRAP elements: All those bullshit fuck-around releases, catering to collector mentalities, KISS worship, and some of the losers (Mike Patton, Tool, etc.) they hang around with, and that terrible, terrible Jello Biafra collaboration, most of their studio albums still hold up. All those records they put out while on Boner were fantastic. The stuff they did on Atlantic only slightly less so. Even much of their recent stuff (well, at least when they stop fucking around and start writing songs) are very good as well.

Plus, I hear they still bring it live.

Not crap.
Police Teeth: we like Void so much, we decided not to sound like them.

To all you "crappers":

Why again? Are you deaf?

I just sat down and read this whole thread, and was shocked by how polarized this board is over the Melvins.

Utter shock.

Does the reason for crapping on the Melvins have anything to do with that other thread about "Affection:..."? I just cannot understand how such intelligent capable people could call the Melvins crap.

So very not crap.

I believe I've seen the Melvins 5 times, and I will continue to rejoice in every opportunity I get to partake.

Viva la Stoner Witch!
Viva la Bullhead!
Viva la Melvins!

Not crap. I've been getting into the recording they did with Lustmord recently. I've only seen them once (in the late 80s at The Cubbie Bear). They rocked pretty hard. I was quite entertained. Who was this guy with the big punky hair playing Sabbath riffs? Lots of fun. This thread makes me want to check them out the next time they come to town.

at their best, their great. i also think they've had a positive musical influence. but man they put out some boring crap!

i went to a show and it got good, and by good i mean sludge epics bringing to mind driving a jeep through a windswept desert at one point, and an alien invasion at another point.

but before they got into this slow zone, they were playing boring beer-swilling rock and i couldn't totally figure out what everyone is going gaga over.

i still haven't heard what i'm guessing is their best stuff (ozma) or their worst stuff (among their zillion albums, i'm sure there some complete snoozers and stinkers). i have houdini, it's good but i don't put it on so much, and i heard the maggot and it was boring as all get out.

NC but overrated.

Folks, I have never been bored or annoyed by a Melvins record or live show. No joke. I haven't seen them play a bunch of times, but the times I have, they've been pretty great. I like Prick, I like the AmRep singles comp, I really like Colossus of Destiny (despite the fact that it involves a member of Tool), I like all of it. Stoner Witch comes a bit close to Metallica/normal cock rock territory in places, but not close enough for me to not like it.

Here's a neat Buzzo interview if anyone's interested. I know I'm linking to Prindle's site a lot, but he does some fine interviewin'.
