Stylus question.

I'm a vinyl spazz, excuse the probably idiotic question.

I have custody of a Rega 'Planar 2' turntable which I reckon probably needs a new needle.

How do I find out what sort of thing this needle should be? Are there standard fittings?

(I know it's a stylus really, not a needle. or is it?)
I walk these streets, a loaded six-string on my back.

I don't know much about this, but I was in a similar situation recently, albeit with a much crapper record player. I just googled the brand and model and found a site that told me what stylus to buy. Then I got it off Amazon for about a tenner. I think with your fancy turntable you need to buy a cartridge. Rega make their own see here but the cheapest one (bias 2?) looks to be about £50, from a quick look around (Amazon don't stock :( ) . I'm sure one of our regular correspondents could tell you if a third party stylus would do the trick.

70$ is not too much for a new needle or system. You can spend hundreds on it if you want. But it's not always needed of course. I have a thorens td160 from the 70s and installed a ortofon nr.2 system. It sounds very great!
With vinyl (or also CD) it's the most important to have units (player-->pre-amp-->amplifier-->speaker) that fit together. A needle for 1000$ doesn't get you anywhere when you plug it into your 1W computer-speaker....
And especially for vinyl I think it's pretty important to have a decent pre-amp (if your power-amp doesn't already have one). Again, on a pre-amp you can spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars.
And another quick notice to start with: There are two systems out on the market: MC (moving coil) and MM (moving magnet), both in all price ranges. MM has more output-level due to the way it "captures" the sound from the record. MC has less output but was said to have a clearer or "better" signal. Today I guess both systems have their legitimacy and it depends on your taste and content of your wallet what you wanna buy.
Which one fit to your Rega just check some sites on the net, you should find what you need.
As said I got a thorens td160 with ortofon nr.2 into a Lehmann BlackCube pre-amp. Altogether around 950 dollars. But it sounds cool!
