Does it serve any purpose besides aesthetic? No. To my knowledge, all it does is, like Sephiroth said, give Steve a handle to grab onto when he swings his guitars around on stage. So, in essence, it's a purely aesthetic addition.

Though, I could not find these pictures of the "early monkey grips", I did find the Vai forums. I figured I would try my luck there. Maybe the man himself has the answers I so desperately crave.
