Messed me up as a kid. This used to be on right as I got home from school, followed by The Wild Wild West and Match Game. Good junior high TV viewing.

The teleplays were great but it was the paintings that messed with me. I swore that when I became an adult that I would furnish my house exclusively with Night Gallery paintings. Unfortunately I was/am unable to be married to someone who would accomodate such a thing.

The second season is supposed to finally be released on DVD in October. I can't wait.

Rod Serling introducing creepy vignettes in a dimly-lit art gallery full of weird paintings vaguely reminiscent of Francis Bacon...

This show used to scare the shit out of me when I was about 8 years old. There was one episode with a country song on a jukebox in a secluded roadside tavern in the South that particularly freaked me out. I can't remember any the details of the story other than something about a young couple, one of whom was murdered. That episode scared me so bad I was up half the night with the horrors.

More recently, I caught a few reruns of it on cable (maybe early '90s USA Network?) and found the stories to be actually kind of laughable. Those paintings were pretty great though.

Not nearly as great as Twilight Zone but surely NOT CRAP, especially those paintings.

I'll reserve final judgment until I get the opportunity to watch a few episodes again.

It's not a bad show. Compared to the Twilight Zone, it's no match. But not bad. Certainly not crap.

The quality is uneven at best. It also has a mix of story lengths... from 10 minutes to a full hour. I get the sense some of the shorter ones were pretty much throwaway ideas. Which makes Night Gallery sort of a Twilight Zone B-sides and import singles collection.

It does feature a ton of 60s and 70s B-list and lower celebrities recorded in color, just a bit past their prime. Also Rod Serling's hairdo is a thing to behold.

It runs several times a week on SciFi channel. Highly TiVo-able.

It was my gateway to Lovecraft. There was an episode with Artie Johnson as a DJ who gets sacrificed to the dark side called "The Flip Side of Satan". Completely awesome.

I think that the scariest ep was the one in which Bill Bixby was "absorbed" by a statue of his druid sorcerer great grandfather. I was unable to sleep for 3 days.

This never happened with The Twilight Zone.

TZ was creepy and clever. Night Gallery was downright evil.
