I thoroughly enjoyed the Berlin gig, guitar malfunction included. This made "Il Porno Star" sound stranger - I liked it! A very happy gig. They played a new song that is apparently about monkeys, and I remember being very excited by it, though I am at an utter loss to describe it two days later. They also played "Killers" again, which is a joy.

Writing this from Warsaw, I should add that the propositions offered that night were incorrect: Poland is neither the Canada nor Mexico of Germany.

Who said that? It seems pretty clear that the Canada of Germany is Austria and that Turkey places the Mexico role in this equation...

In a lull in the questions, Steve asked the audience what the Canada of Germany is, and someone shouted "Poland!" To which Bob replied that they saw Poland as the Mexico. From a brief amount of time here, I'd disagree strongly, at least for Warsaw.

Also notable was Bob's line "Steve's guitar is ausgefuckt", or somesuch.

You're right, Poland doesn't really have a counterpart in the Western Hemisphere, so it's not the best pick to play Canada/Mexico games with. One could try to argue that Poland was the Canada of the DDR during the Communist era, but even that doesn't work very well, considering the lack of a common language and the fact that, as Communist regimes go, Poland was vastly superior to East Germany back then.

But who knows. Maybe they'll try to say the same think about the Czech Republic. I hope I'll find out in Prague tonight.

Sure, it makes complete sense. On an intertextual level, there are many European countries which present a parallel to the United States/Canada paradigm. Austria is the Canada of Germany, Portugal is the Canada of Spain, Norway is the Canada of Sweden, Slovakia is the Canada of the Czech Republic.

Belgium has the special honor of being the Canada of both France and the Netherlands.
