Bands: The Birthday Party vs. Bauhaus

16
I love Bauhaus and really appreciate their mix of cartoony, gothic wan, and dubby experimentation. I would pile them in with The Birthday Party in the sense that the latter have a sort of gothic, gloomy creep and howl to them. Christian Death, Joy Division, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, etc., all have some vague points of relation.

That said, Bauhaus is not really in the same universe as The Birthday Party in ways that allow a comparison that might seriously conflate the one with the other. In other words, I can see lumping them together in a superficial, convenient way, but any thought sends them hurtling away to opposite sides of a large room.

The Birthday Party are that rare band that furthered the fullest spirits of rock and roll. TBP had a little bit (alot) of the self-flagellated catholic quandary slathered in the animal commands of sex and intoxication and the howl of swamp nigger (reminiscent of a time when that word belonged to evil men in power) disdain. How they channeled all of that I do not know.
