This man has too many albums for me to try to get into him on my own, in fear at least that I accidentally pick up one that was more "off" than the others. Can someone recommend a couple by him that will give him a fair shot to my ears?

I found the depressive, acoustic, bluesy Blue Corpse and the electric You Walk Alone to be a great entry point back when they came out (87 and 88, I think), though admittedly they're from the most "accessible" period. One could argue it either way--start with the easy stuff and get acquainted, or start with the more, um, difficult periods to get a sense of his world's contours.

Glad to Get Away (1994?) was my first dip into the Jandek discog and remains one of my favorites, its a little more "straight forward" but I think a great record.

As well as the albums already mentioned, I love Lost Cause.

The Wikipedia pages on each album are excellent.

Anyone else going to see Jandek in Ann Arbor this Saturday? Should be interesting, and it's a free show.

I encourage anyone with even a passing interest in Jandek to try to see him play live. The shows I have seen have been jawdroppingly good. It confirmed what I had suspected of him from his recorded output - that he's a good improviser with a very real musical sense (albeit quite unique as far as tuning concepts go.)

I dream of playing as a sideman to him some day.

Ditto the above suggestions - You Walk Alone, Living End, Blue Corpse, RFTH, Modern Dances.
Also, grab some of the recent live stuff, I think Glasgow Sunday is the really good one.
I just realized I've "known" Maurice from the Jandek and TV lists for like 8 years.
