How did you know who they were? Did they introduce themselves?
Sometimes; other times I'll see them and be like "oh yeah, that's [whoever]."
And other times there will be people I know, but be visually represented by strangers.
I buy your theory that "strangers" in dreams are actually people we've actually seen in passing, but I also don't think it's impossible for the brain to create an image of a person from whole cloth. When I read books as a kid I would imagine what the characters looked like, and this was way before I could have seen many people.
