Hi there,
Imagine a room the size of an average church, same height of ceiling but all in wood with a much better sound. A stage on which there is an incredible sound when playing, My question: what would be the best way to record the sound of the room to get a maximum of drums ambient sound with a minimum of the other instruments ?
I was thinking putting two so-called room mics either in front or at the back (if I have enough space) of the drums and then try to get rid of the guitars in adding their track with the phase reversed to cancel the sound already present.
I have done that in studio context it really works great but you may have others tips and tricks for live.

2I'm not sure how well your method of "subracting" the instruments from the ambient mics will work well here since the sounds will be fairly diffused by reflections if the room is very reverberant. I think I would go for the best ambient sound I could capture and then work with that, but experiment if you have time. Watch out if things get muddy - I've recorded in a concert hall before which had great reverb for Classical, but it wasn't fantastic for loud bands.
Is this a gig or just a recording by the way? You could possibly record either with the amps relatively quiet, or obviously position the amps further away from the drums.
Oh, and try the Tech Room.
